Breton Fields is our certified organic farm where the bulk of our brewing hops are grown. It was originally homesteaded in 1865 by Alexander MacKenzie and his family from Scotland, and it stayed in the MacKenzie family as a homestead and subsistence dairy farm and wood mill for 4 generations until we found it, on the verge of ruins, in 2008.
We enjoy a gently sloped, south facing exposure facing Nyanza Bay on the Bras D’Or Lake (Canada’s Inland Sea, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). This sunny position tempers the arrival of fall and provides a solid, sometimes long, growing season. We grow our certified organic hops, have an apple orchard, and a small market garden.
In 2014 we have expanded with a ½ acre market garden and greenhouse being operated by our friends at Localmotive Farm of Hunter’s Mountain. Come see what we’re up to, and get a peak at how we grow some of the great ingredients we put in our beer!
